As I discussed in my first post, there are fewer non-academic distractions at a same-sex high school.
Heads turning, winks from across the room, flirty smiles, whispering followed with loud giggles, and butterflies in girls’ stomach as they pass a cute boy in the hall. On top of that, girls are brushing their hair and reapplying their makeup every free chance they get. These are just a few of the many distractions that occur at co-ed high schools, all because the opposite sex is present.
However, if you send your child to a same-sex school there will be much less distraction, as boys are not trying to impress the girls, and vice versa. Boys and girls will often state that they concentrate much better without the opposite sex in the classroom. For me personally, it was one less thing that I had to worry about and distract me from learning.
At same-sex high schools, boys and girls worry much less on looks and popularity. For instance, I was able to wake up 15 minutes before I left the house for school. I did not waste time trying to fix my hair, or put on eyeliner or mascara in order to impress boys. We always looked presentable, but how we looked was definitely not a priority. No one cared what each other looked like because boys were not there to judge us. Most days I would go to school with a wet bun on top of my head. Makeup was laughed upon, and girls who straightened their hair for school were always jokingly made fun of. High school is a place to learn; it is not a beauty pageant.

When talking to some of my public school friends, as well as my mom and dad about their public school education, they stated how they wished that they had it as easy as I did. Fitting in and being “cool” was always something to worry about. According to the Stage of Life High School website, "40% of teens are afraid of peer pressure or not fitting in with people at school."
A same-sex school provides the perfect escape from those fears. Boys definitely have less social pressures at an all-boys school, as girls are not present, just like girls have less social pressures at an all-girls school because boys are not present. I can honestly say, that there was almost no such thing as popularity at my high school. What often drives popularity is how boys perceive certain types of girls. Because there were no boys present, popularity did not really exist.
In general, same-sex schools provide the most beneficial ways of learning for both male and females. By sending your child to a same-sex school, your child will be able to focus better in the classroom because there will be less non-academic distractions taking place, due to the fact that the opposite sex will not be present. With fewer distractions, students tend to focus better, which can in turn lead to better grades.
Stay tuned, my next post will discuss how a same-sex school provides a non- judgmental atmosphere, allowing both males and females to get involved and express their values and beliefs.
